its cold outside
Recently Norwood School's were closed due to severly cold weather on Dec. 15. Students were excited to hear they would have a day off right before their first bell exam. I'm sure most of them studied for their exams all day and didn't sleep in at all. Unfortunately the students were back into class on Dec. 16. It was the students first "snow day" of the year and the appreciated decision that Rob Amodio, the schools superintendent, made.
Stacy Strong Fundraising
The Service Chiefs of Norwood High school are at it again with another project to help their community. Even better, to help and support a teacher they all once had who is going through a rough patch.
Mrs. Melissa Stacy has been the photography teacher at Norwood High School for more than 10 years. She has taught most of the Service Chiefs and is described by many as a very uplifting, happy-go-lucky type of person. Stacy learned she has a type of skin cancer called Melanoma.
According the the Skin Cancer Foundation, If melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable, but if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal. While it is not the most common of the skin cancers, it causes the most deaths. In 2016, an estimated 76,380 of these will be invasive melanomas, with about 46,870 in males and 29,510 in women.
While some of the treatment Stacy needs is paid for, there are numerous expenses she and her family must cover. The Service Chiefs wanted to guarantee Stacy will have all of the help she needs. They decided to put together a fundraiser to help raise money for the Stacy family in order to help pay for all of these unwanted expenses caused from her illness.
The Service Chiefs put together things to sell, and when they are sold. They decided on Ornaments hand made by the Service Chiefs that say Stacy Strong on them, candy canes with Stacy strong ribbons, and brownies. The games are on December sixth and sixteenth. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Stacy family.

Thanksgiving Day Canned Food Drive
The Service Chiefs of Norwood High put together a canned food drive to help underprivileged families who can’t afford Thanksgiving. The food drive was set up by the Service Chiefs, as well as Gear Up Director Maureen Heinz and Nathan Hale. The
Chiefs sent out an email explaining the “competition” to students and staff of their School. The email explained the tasks of the food drive, and that the winning advisory would get a special surprise.
The goal was for each advisory to collect as many cans in the two week time period of the competition. At the end of the two weeks, the cans for each advisory were to be counted and the advisory with the most cans would win the prize
The goal of this canned food drive was not just to win a prize, it was to help out families in need. Hundreds of families across the United States are left without a thanksgiving dinner, due to no money, or even some kids have no families at all. This concerned the service chiefs, and they decided that helping out in this time of year would be an amazing first project.
The food drive was a hit, the cans collected will be taken to New Haven church where families may sign up to gain access to some of these foods, so that Thanksgiving may be possible for some people.
The winning advisory was Ms. Ostermann with 220 cans, following in second place was Mrs. Martin with 180, and lastly Mr. N Hale with 133 cans. The students and staff of Norwood High School are very well thanked, and should feel very proud that they will be making Thanksgiving an amazing holiday again for some families.

The legacy assembly
Norwood High School hosted an assembly for Legacy, a Northern Kentucky leadership group. The goal of the assembly was to help students get their “labels” off.
A label is a name someone is given like geek, jock or marshmellow. The speaker of the program was trying to explain to us why having a label isn’t good. He said that when we get a label it sticks with us and it will eventually get into our heads and affect us later in life.
His message was strong, but he through drugs in there at the end very briefly. The speaker wants us to rip our labels off and just be ourselves.

Beacon Orthopedics field trip
Students experience a hands on leg dissection
Students in science teacher Leslie Hadaway's anatomy class took a field trip on Nov. 22 to Beacon Orthopedics. On this field trip, the students had the privilege to take part in a hands on human leg dissection. Students wore full body scrubs and had the opportunity to learn how to apply stitches to a wound and learn how to reassemble an ACL to a leg. Make sure to stop by Hadaway's room and learn more about the field trip. Also, see what you can do to be able to take on this experience next year.
School play informational meeting
Students are invited to an informational meeting on Monday during advisory where they will discuss the annual school play. The meeting, which takes place in the mini auditorium, is to get kids interested in larger numbers. The number of students who show up will determine which play will be chosen. The options for the show are The Man Who Came To Dinner and Rumors by Neil Simon.
Annual youth summit
All students will be called down to the middle school auditorium for the annual Youth Summit on Tuesday, November 22 at 8:30 a.m. It will last about an hour and fifteen minutes. Freshman will be told to report to the gym for additional information. After the program everyone's schedule will be returning to normal around lunchtime.

Service Chiefs of Norwood High School
Maureen Heinz, Norwood High School Gear Up member, has recently started a new organization called Service Chiefs. The Service Chiefs is a group of kids chosen by Heinz, these are kids she feels are the “Student Leaders” of the school. They are children who are expected to be givers, and love helping others.
The first meet of the Service Chiefs was on Thursday, Sep 28. All of the chosen leaders met in the Gear Up loft during advisory to discuss the upcoming opportunities, and the goals of this great group of kids. These Leaders have certain jobs to uphold for every event they do. Right now they are working on a can food drive for families who do not have the money to buy food for Thanksgiving.
The Service Chiefs will be presenting this new event on Monday during advisory. They have decorated boxes for the Thanksgiving season to store the cans, and each advisory will be competing for a special prize. The advisory that has the most cans in their box at the end of the competition will receive the prize, and get the awesome feeling of giving back.
This organization is not just about winning a prize, or being named the winner. It is about giving back, not only to your community, but to the world and people less fortunate than you. Mrs. Heinz’ goal is to help these young teens see that giving back to the community is an amazing thing, and makes you feel like such a better person in the long run.
